Student-Athletes are expected to:
1. Positively reflect the BHS community, adhering to standards of the ‘Code of Conduct’ as outlined in the school’s student handbook.
In the event students are found to be disregarding or disrespecting these standards a meeting will be scheduled with coach(es) in the program to address such concerns. In the event such a meeting should occur it may also be attended by other relevant adult parties, including but not limited to: parents, teachers, counselors, trainer, and/or athletic director.
2. Remain compliant to MIAA guidelines regarding chemical health of student-athletes.
The BHS field hockey program has no tolerance for non-compliance. Any student-athlete who is found in violation of MIAA standards regarding chemical health could be faced with the consequence of removal from athletic competition for the duration of the field hockey season and denied attendance to ALL games, practices and team functions/events.
3. Attend every practice and game with the exception of emergency situations and/or similarly serious extenuating circumstances.
In the event of a situation that requires absence from a practice or game the PLAYER is expected to communicate with the coach at least 24 hours before the scheduled athletic event. To be clear, not doing your homework in time is NOT a legitimate reason for missing a practice and/or game. Student-athletes gain valuable time management skills by learning to balance commitment to education AND athletics.
Any student-athlete that is unable to attend a practice (for ANY reason) the day before a game will not start in the following athletic competition.
4. Treat ALL coaches, teammates, BHS athletic staff, competitors, and referees with respect.
The BHS field hockey program is committed to positive attitude and sportsmanship at all levels of the program. This dedication to the spirit of competitive excellence will be present in the behavior of ALL coaches. However, it will manifest most strongly in the behavior of our student-athletes. Any player, in any contest, at any level of the program, whom is found to be in violation of the program’s expectations of positive attitude and/or sportsmanship can and will be removed from the contest/practice/scrimmage. Violations of sportsmanlike behavior include but are not limited to: cursing, aggressive or threatening gestures, inappropriate communication or “trash-talk”, pushing, intentional illegal manners of play, etc. Identification of violations (and the subsequent severity of punishment) will occur at the discretion of the coaches.
5. Understand that it is a PRIVILEGE, not a right, to be a member of the BHS field hockey program. Playing time* is earned, not provided.
As such, there is an expectation of 100% effort and dedication of all members at all levels of the program. If any member of the program has a concern with their playing time, that PLAYER is welcome to approach her coach to discuss. The earlier lines of communication are open on this subject, the better.
***Competition for playing time increases as a student-athlete works their way up the levels of the program. In other words, players at sub-varsity levels can expect to play in each contest, though perhaps not equally. Players at the Varsity level are not guaranteed this.
